About Stephen C. Bigelow, PhD

I am an educator, writer, and school leader whose career has been shaped by a simple belief: strong schools are built through clarity, courage, relationships, and an unwavering commitment to students.

I currently serve as Superintendent of the Pan American School of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. PASB is a nonprofit international school where students learn across languages and cultures while pursuing American, Brazilian, and International Baccalaureate pathways. Leading this community has expanded my understanding of education and reminded me that, while school systems may differ, the work of leadership remains profoundly human.

Before moving to Brazil, I spent more than 25 years in Michigan public education as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. During my decade as a superintendent, I led two school districts through strategic planning, financial restructuring, organizational change, curriculum modernization, facility improvements, and the unprecedented disruption of a global pandemic.

After retiring from the Michigan public-school system, I did not retire from education. I chose a new chapter—one that brought me across continents and into international-school leadership.

Throughout my career, I have been drawn to the work behind the work: the conversations that strengthen culture, the trust that allows teams to take risks, and the daily decisions that determine whether an organization’s stated values are genuinely reflected in its actions. I believe leadership requires both confidence and humility—the confidence to make difficult decisions and the humility to acknowledge when we still have something to learn.

Brazil has given me plenty of opportunities to practice that humility. I am regularly reminded that fluency in leadership does not necessarily translate into fluency in Portuguese. Navigating another language and culture has made me a more attentive listener, a more curious leader, and a more patient human being. It has also reignited my passion for this work.

My professional interests include organizational culture, leadership development, strategic planning, innovation, artificial intelligence in education, and the future of international schools. I was honored to be selected as a Google for Education Innovation Fellow, an experience that strengthened my commitment to thoughtful, student-centered innovation.

Visionary Ed Leadership is where I reflect on what I am learning—from classrooms and boardrooms, from Michigan and Bahia, and from the moments when leadership becomes less about having the right answer and more about asking a better question.

Some of what I write is practical. Some is personal. Much of it lives somewhere in between. I write about schools, leadership, culture, travel, relationships, and the unexpected experiences that challenge our assumptions and help us grow.

After all these years, I remain convinced that education is fundamentally a people business. People are complicated, organizations are messy, and leadership rarely unfolds exactly as planned. That is also what makes the work meaningful.

I am still learning, still leading, and still optimistic about what schools—and the people within them—can become.
